View Ursa Major Ursa Major is a constellation, or pattern of stars, that looks like a bear. You can see it in the night sky in the northern hemisphere. Long ago, people used myths to explain the stars and planets. They often named constellations after people or animals. 14 Hector peered into the hole and a claw swiped at him. The furious bear tried again and again to crawl out of the hole, but he kept sliding back down before reaching the top. The bear growled wildly with frustration, but he could not escape. Hector quickly lowered a lasso into the hole and around the bear’s chest. Then, with a firm grip, he jerked his rope tight. The grizzly struggled to slip out of the rope’s strangling hold. It took a mighty pull to haul the fighting bear out of the hole, but Hector succeeded. Before the bear could swipe his claws at Hector, Hector took a deep breath, heaved the bear up, and then flung the bear into the sky. Smiling, Hector returned to his horse and quickly rode back to town.
