Before school, after school, summer school, small groups…it’s not the where or the when that matters—what’s important is to catch those students who need extra help wherever and whenever you can. That’s why we developed Intervention Backpacks—to support you in making the most of every opportunity to help students become proficient on-level readers. Each portable kit includes all the materials you need, making targeted reading intervention as easy as 1-2-3.
Intervention Backpacks provide the systematic, explicit instruction that works for struggling readers—and their teachers! A simple three-step instructional plan makes the program easy to implement in any intervention setting (well, except maybe during a fire drill).
Step 1 — Deliver explicit comprehension instruction in research-proven skills and strategies along with multiple opportunities to practice using the student worktext, which is full of rich literature selections and informational text passages. The selections in each book begin below level and get progressively more complex throughout each unit, bringing students up to grade level by the end of each book.
Step 2 — Apply what you’ve learned in a new context. Two Key Links Leveled Books—one fiction and one nonfiction—engage students with confidence-building independent practice. Both titles are aligned with the reading level, the theme, and the focus comprehension skill of the unit.
Step 3 — Demonstrate mastery using the graphic organizers provided in each worktext or included CD. Built-in unit reviews, cumulative reviews, and final reviews, as well as pretests and posttests, provide many opportunities for students to show what they have learned and for teachers to monitor their progress.
